About - Sue Jones Sculptor
Shropshire Lass - Oxfordshire Sculptor. Although born in Shropshire I consider Oxfordshire my spiritual home, I live and work in this beautiful County that informs my work, feeling so lucky to have found a medium that allows me to express my creativity and respond to all that inspires me. My home is in the Cherwell Valley, my walks around the vale are a daily ritual that ensure I have a constant connection with nature. I was born in 1964 and grew up in Shropshire, at 16 I moved to Oxfordshire to work with horses and fell in love with the county. I first took up sculpting with the Bicester Sculpture Group in 2009. I work at home and with the group in a large studio finding this environment creative, stimulating and very enjoyable, I'm also a member of the Oxford Sculptors Group. I work in a number of materials to create unique sculpture and limited editions of cold cast bronze or bronze. Currently I am working with unique works in stainless steel and Slate on a variety of bases, from green oak to Portland Stone Artist Statement I had always been drawn to sculpture and would have to touch the pieces to connect and experience the texture and shapes. When I sculpt I draw my inspiration from all the natural shapes that I see on my walks that nature has designed already. From the patterns on the beach that are left by the sea, plant seed heads, ripples of water, texture of tree bark, shapes of leaves, they all feed into my creative emotions. I love my work to be touched and enjoy watching people read the shapes and textures by handling them, as I did when creating them. Each piece is a very personal expression. |
I am lucky to find myself able to access great art in Oxford with a major source of inspiration at the
Ashmolean Museum, where there are thousands (millions actually) of artefacts, sculptures, paintings that have inspired and informed my work. Also in Oxford is the Museum of Modern Art & The Pitt Rivers Museum.
In nearby Warwickshire there is one of Britain's greatest treasures, Compton Verney a Georgian House set in a Capability Brown Landscape, recent exhibitions such as the Henry Moore and Rodin, have been a delight especially as the work benefited from the spectacular backdrop for such wonderful sculptures from past masters.
